The right kind of lighting can instantly transform a boring home into an eye-pleasing wonder. While that holds true, people often do not take into account what impact these lighting fixtures can have on the environment. The fluorescent bulbs and CFL lights which we normally use can do more harm than good. With the rising issue of global warming, it’s time to make an eco-friendly switch from the high power consuming CFLs to the environment’s best friend- LED lights! Not sure of how and where to start? Worry not, we’ve got you covered. Read on to learn more about LED lights and be on your way to becoming more environmentally responsible.

LED in a flash: How do LED lights work?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes. In simple layman terms, they are a two-lead semiconductor which work when current passes through, resulting in the emission of light. There has been a huge shift towards LEDs in homes, industries, public and corporate places owing to their innumerable benefits. Initially, they were worth a king’s ransom, however as the technology advanced, they became available at affordable prices.

The bright side: What are the benefits of using LEDs?

Here are some of the biggest advantages of switching to LED lighting fixtures.

LEDs are more efficient

In comparison to incandescent bulbs, LEDs are far more efficient and cost-effective. An LED bulb can last up to  80,000 hours whereas a CFL bulb can last up to an average of 10,000 hours only. Another impressive characteristic of LED bulbs is that they convert 100% of their energy into light while CFL bulbs use a meager 10% of the energy and the rest is dissipated as heat. This affects the overall temperature of the home, forcing people to use air conditioners and fans.

They breed fewer bacteria

Restaurants and cafés have started using LED lighting as it has been proven that they breed fewer bacteria than the fluorescent light bulbs. It has become a popular choice for lighting amongst delicatessen and bakeries as it keeps the food items a lot fresher than usual.

They are environment-friendly

One way to make your home more eco-friendly is by using LEDs. They are exponentially better for the environment than any other lighting choice for various reasons. One of them is the fact that they do not contain any hazardous chemicals while fluorescent light bulbs have mercury and other toxic chemicals as main components. When these bulbs are thrown away into landfills, there is a high risk of contamination through the air that might endanger several lives. In addition to this, LEDs do not emit any harmful UV rays while other types of lights can potentially put your health at a great risk.

LED bulbs attract fewer bugs than traditional lights

Ever wondered why there’s always a swarm of bugs hovering around your light bulb? It’s on account of the UV light exposure and heat that are transmitted from it. LEDs will keep those bugs at bay because they emit far less heat. You can enjoy a good monsoon day with a cup of hot tea minus the swarming bugs with this simple lighting solution.
